St John the Evangelist

My uncles were both choirboys here and my father sang in the choir as a man during the 1920s. There was a choir school here and my uncles both attended this school; they were probably born in1909 and 1914. The school and a good deal of the church was severely damaged by a bomb in World War 2. Princess Elizabeth came to lay the foundation stone when it was finally re-built, and I was given a few hours off work to see the Princess.
My husband became the organist here in about 1975 or 1976 and stayed for more than 34 years. He was, with some generous parishioners, and the then Rector Rev. Kenneth Clinch, instrumental in bringing the magnificent Harrison & Harrison organ to St. John's from St. Catherine's College, Cambridge
