1964 was a time when the local Education Board were seeking to establish a new junior branch of the Helenswood comprehensive girls school. As a Private Prep School, all the evidence suggests it was run extremely well, but various "deficiencies" were contrived by the Education Board, and it was closed in 1968.The building was demolished, to make way for the new Maplehurst School.
Gerald Brodribb, the head master, became very depressed at the turn of events, and as a distraction, embarked on the exploration of Roman remains in Beauport Woods. As a result, the extraordinary scale of industrial iron making has been better understood, and a complete Roman Bath house exposed - arguably the most significant local historical feature, dwarfing a small conflict with Normandy in 1066.
