Does anyone remember a school in Ore called Red Lake secondary modern. I went there aged 11 in 1957

Gloria, the only secondary modern school that I can think of that would fit your description was the girls school opposite The Kings Head pub now called Hilltop I think. The timing would be right and it would have been new then.

Gloria, Paul, it certainly was known as Ore Secondary Modern. I lived in what was Red Lake Road, renamed Rye Road and my sisters went there. Red Lake Infants was at the bottom of the road set back between the main road and Downs Farm housing estate. I went to this school from 1959 to 62.

Thank you Colin and Paul for your replies. I didn’t realise there was a Red Lake infants school. Love looking at this site, so many memories of the fifties.

Yes Red Lake Infants was as Colin says, and the Secondary School opposite The Kings Head pub at the top of Rye Road was called Hillcrest. We used to play in its grounds in the evenings and weekends by bunking a gate. Plenty to do and explore in there!

The Secondary school discussed here was called Hastings Secondary School for Girls in the 1959s-1960s.. We lived almost opposite and my Mum was the school secretary from about 1957-1967. I can remember hearing her answering the phone using this name for the school whenever I was in her office in the school holidays. I also went to Red Lake Infants school on the same side of the road as the Secondary Modern and later to Sandown Primary school, at that time in two different buildings either end of what was called Ore Village.

Does anyone know what the part of Sandown School opposite The Ridge was originally built for? I started off in Mrs Hinds class in the shed next door, moved on to Red Lake Infants, then Sandown (both parts), all between 1956 and 1962.
