I managed to purchase a print of this as a gift in Brighton. It was for a lady aged 82 who was born in St Leonards but grew up in Silverhill and Hollington. She was very pleased to see how Duke Road looked in her grandmother and granfathers time. Managed to look up the last cenus of 1911 which gave additional information.

I remember this junction well.
My Dad taught me to drive in 1970 in his 1962 Hillman Minx - no synchromesh on first gear
and coming up battle road, had to judge the speed to get up Duke Road in 2nd or suffer the
aggro of judging the right time to 'slip it' into first for smooth progress up the hill. Thankfully I
learnt rapidly coz another of his favourites was the left turn from Stonefield Road and up into
Nelson Road.....Happy days.
p.s. I passed the driving test 1st time!
