Fishing Boats & Pumping Station

This looks like the old Corporation Refuse Destructor building. Steam was made from burning rubbish and used to disinfect bedding, etc. I seem to recall the plant supplied power to pump water for the old East Hill Lift which was then on a water balance system. There was also a rudimentary sewage works, owned by the "Hastings Manure Company" I think. The sewage works idea was dropped after complaints of foul smells when the wind was easterly, and the sewage then was simply let out by gravity. It was originally treated to a degree so solids would settle out, be dried on the sewage building's upper floor, and sold as fertiliser. The car park at Rock-a-Nore is partly over the two huge underground tanks used for this. Later still, the present ugly electrically-driven "Marine Treatment Works" or " Rock-a-Nore Sewage Disposal " was built, this simply shredded and pumped the waste out via the original cast-iron outfall pipe, parts of it are still there. In this way they got rid of the turds on the beach problem, EW ! The electric shredder is still there, but now pumps sewage to Bulverhythe Works. It still ends up in the sea, so I'm told, but via a longer pipe...
