This photo brings back memories - i think one was based here most of one summer, offered trips. A great invention, not fully utilised. Some were used by US forces in Vietnam.

When the hovercraft first came to Hastings it was thought that it would be the start of a lot of business & visitors for trip across the Channel but it was but short lived

I remember the incredible noise it made. Perhaps that was a contributing factor to its demise. Always wanted to have a go in it, though.

I worked as beach crew which involved guiding the pilot to land using bats, marshalling passengers on and off and ensuring the beach was clear for take off. The two beach crew also shared going out on the trips as cabin crew. As far as I remember it only operated one summer (1967) from the beach opposite Pelham Crescent, running pleasure trips up and down the coast. It would generally be a flight east close to the cliffs or west to Galley Hill and back. The SRN6 craft was based on Dover.

A number of Ditch group 14 guys have been searching for a Derek Wilson for a few years in order to invite him to one of our meets. If it’s you, please take a look at the Shoreditch College website and you’ll find details of how to contact us. If not, my apologies.

I recall standing on the beach watching one land. I wasn't far away, they had to throttle up to get over the "bump". The noise was impressive and I was machine-gunned by pebbles shot out from the skirt.

i have photographs when i was 6 months old approx (making it 1966) and my parents took a trip to see the Hovercraft and we even went on it.

My Dad took the whole family on the trip up the coast. It was a bit scary at first, but we really enjoyed it. I was 16 at the time and have never forgotten it.
