An interesting photo. Place looks unchanged in 1960s when i lived locally and used to walk there from Clive Vale.

By a strange coincidence I was driving down Fairlight Rd last week (late May 2018) and made a detour to see if North's Seat (as I believe it was called) was still there. I used to play and go camping round there as a boy in the early 70s. Sadly the wooden tower is no longer there but the brass plaque that used to be fixed to a tree trunk at the top, showing distances to places ranging from Sedlescombe to New York, is now fixed to a concrete plinth. It was only a few days later I stumbled upon this excellent website and saw this photo.

I often used to spend time around North Seat when I lived in Victoria Avenue, Ore, as child and young man in the late 1940s and the 1950s. Very sad that the wooden tower disappeared many years ago as the views from the top were brilliant, if a trifle windy at tines. Happy days!

North Seat look out , we used to call it, just up the lane from the roman pond. Looks a lot different now, no where near as pretty

I too used to love climbing up to the platform as a small boy in the 70s. At the time it seemed so high! Shame it’s not there any more.....great views
-
I seem to recall that it was burnt down by vandals, can anyone confirm this?
-
I'm afraid i can't remember the date but as a young boy i played there for many years, and unfortunately yes it was burnt down by vandals.Like you I had very many happy memories from North seat fairlight,to st Leonards bathing pool to West hill ladies parlour.

The Roman pond .... brings back memories.... Can you run round the Roman ? And jump the stairs ? ..... L Hodges didn’t you family run a wood cutting yard in Mill Lane ?
-
We used to play up there as chldren in the 50’s, and my mother said she was shot at by german planes while she was walking the dog during the war
-
WOW ! that`s a bit drastic just for walking a dog. Great memories of this place, camped out there, in the summer hols. spent most of time there, and of course the firehills with its terrain, it was like something from a western movie. What about the old pools of water that were there ? something to do with the sand quarry I think

Lived and worked in Hastings 1979-80, my first proper job. Often went up North's Seat on crisp, fine clear days, through Autumn, Winter and Spring. Standing on top of the viewing platform with a very old pair of possibly ex-naval binoculars, there were days (not many) you could just make out the white cliffs of France. The air will be clearer these day, but the platform is gone.

Yes, Ro Pelling. Like many good municipal facilities (such as the Albert Memorial) I believe it was partly burned and then demolished by the council. Saved on maintenance I guess! Happy memories of standing up there with my dad and binoculars. We often visited on a summer's evening as a 'trip out'. Simple pleasures back in the 60s!

Revisited today, happy family memories from 1950s and occasionally since. Dug out old photos when I got home. A special place...
