My late mother May FAIRBROTHER (née BALDI) & her cousin Elsie COOPER (née MORTON) both attended this school (approx 1916 to 1922). They both lived in Winchelsea Road

Didn't this later become one half of Sandown Juniors? I think 2nd & 3rd years were here & 1st & 4th were in the other building in School Road. I was here in 1965 in Miss Longhurst's class. I used to live on Old London Road up near the Ridge.

Paul is right, this did become Sandown Juniors. I was also here in 1965. I can't recall my teachers name right now, but my classroom was at the front of the building, right of the entrance. It was one of three rooms separated by partitions that were opened for the morning assembly. I left at the end of that year to move to Hollington Juniors. I recently went into the building, which is now a community centre and took some photos. it is remarkable how familiar it all was, very little has changed. as for Miss Longhurst: hated her for being such an awful bully. she made many of us cry for little reason.

I had many lessons in these classrooms and can remember Mr Levy teaching arithmetic and Miss Braeburn teaching needlework. I also went to Ore youth club in the evenings which was held in the building. This would have been approx 1955 to 1959.

Mixed feelings about my 2 years in what was known as The Annex.... on one hand we Mr Sewell , an excellent
teacher who always made you feel comfortable ...... on the other hand we had Ms Shanahan who didnt waste an opportunity to belittle and humiliate you for trivial mistakes . Even so I still felt pity for the kids in Mrs
Longhursts class .... she was a terrifying harpy .....happy days ? some of them ! -
I lived in Middle Road and went to Red Lake as an infant and then Sundown (both sites) in the early to mid 60s. I remember Miss Shanahan slapping me for having my hands in my pockets. My mum went down the same lunchtime and tore her off a strip. Miss Longhurst was never my teacher but I remember how scary she looked! I recall too the winter of 65/66 (I think) when this building froze and we had an extra two weeks off school after the Christmas hols.

I lived in Churchil Ave when the houses were first built. My brother (Kerry Wilson) and I went to Red Lake (infants), then Sandown - school and 'annexe' in the days of the legendary Mrs Terrell (who later appeared on 'Brain of Britain), Mr Norton (and Miss Braban!), Mr Sewell, Miss Paul... not to mention the scary Miss Hayward and her 'magic' hand cream that made a 'smack' hurt more!! For a 'serious' misdemeanour, boys got "the slipper"... girls, the ruler! Oh the miles we walked through Ore village to and from school - and between the two sites! - and I well remember fighting up the hill on Old London Road in a foot of snow in a blizzard to get home one afternoon.... Astonishing what we survived - and we were well educated...

My teacher here was Mr. Sewell.
The girls playground was at the front, the boys were at the back. Following a stupid fight, we were made to stand, facing the fence, in the girls playground.
We cultivated a small garden adjacent to the girls playground.
My teacher in senior year, at the new building, was Nobby Norton, a wonderful teacher. -
Soon turned into a social club, run by Ernie ? nice bloke very long hair, I remember doing a 36 hour snooker/table tennis marathon one weekend to raise money for the club, can`t remember when exactly, early 70`s ish.

I went there from 1958 to 1962, remember a Susan Ballard, she was in my class, Teacher was Knoby Norton. Also remember most of the above teacher names
Went to Mrs Lonhursts, Garden somewhere in st Leonard's, with the class, yes she was strict
But i liked her, and at her home outside the school environment, she was lovely. -
Went to both sandown schools everything was wonderful until secondary school. Mr.sewel was fantastic Norton and braburn lest said about them the best!! All in all would never want to go back to school in the latter years!!! Bullies still out there not much has changed. Miss those days slot especially freedom and fun

I spent all 4 years at Sandown, split between the 2 sites. 1961-5. I lived in Red Lake Road, which was later renamed Rye Road. Maiden name Smith. I best remember Miss Brayburn and Mr Sewell, both of whom I thought were fantastic, but also Miss Paul, Mr Norton and Mrs Longhurst. Can anyone remember who was head teacher? Many years after I left, Miss Brayburn continued to ask after my progress if ever she saw my mum round the town. She inspired me to want to become a teacher. Loved all 4 years.
In my teens I returned to help at the PHAB club who met there weekly once the “ new Sandown” was opened on The Ridge. -
Went to both sites 1963-66’ish after red lake. Mr Sewell football and gardening, Nobby Norton with his stories (when in a rare good mood and friendly with Miss Braeburn) about ‘Bill’ in the war-died in my last year there, Mr Bone and Miss Shanahan (bit like Dusty Springfield)

When I was at Sandown, the headmaster was Mr Eastham.

I went to sandown and the annex as Steve Lee recalled. Most of the teachers were nasty pieces of work. I got caned three strokes with Michael Iyama for fighting at playtime! I was sticking up for Michael as he was getting picked on. Eastham done the caning with Norton as his wing man! He said nobody had ever been caned at sandown before! It was good practice for what was to come at priory road. Good old days (some of them).
