I am trying to put together a book of memories for my wife Sally, who, as Sally Sparke, trained as a nurse at St Helen's around 1979 and celebrates 40 years of nursing this year. Does anyone remember her?
Many thanks,
Doug -
Did some of my training here on children's and 2&2a and then on medical wards. Days and nights and lived in the nurses home. Very happy memories of Hastings School of Nursing including cadets between 1957 -1962
Nursing was really nursing in those far off days. -
I sailed from Trinidad to Southhampton in 1968. There was a train strike so took a coach to St. Helen's, Hastings Sussex to start my nurses training. I met some wonderful young ladies from all over the world during my time there. If anyone can help me track down some of these people I would

Not sure what happened but my comments were posted before I was finished. ..... be very happy. some of the names are, Carol Adams, Miss Fearon, Alma Greaves, Jill Hardcastle to name a few. After my training, I went on to Hackney and did my Midwifery there. I now live in Canada with my husband, children and grandkids. Would love to hear from anyone. Blessings Val

I was also born there in 1955. Yes, nice to see a photo, as we left Hastings when I was a baby, so I've never known it.

In September 1946 I was rushed to St. Helen's Hospital (then Hastings Workhouse) with my mother. My birth was problematic, and I was not expected to live. We were at St. Helen's for 6 weeks. Obviously, the treatment was good as over 73 years later I am still here.

My first house job there was in 1987. Cycled home to London the night after the hurricane in October that year - probably the only person to travel between the 2 that night as there were reputedly 300 trees on the road just from Hastings to Battle!

I trained at The Hastings District School Of Nursing from 1977-1979 .
Great times, lovely to see the photos of St Helen's Hospital, exactly how I remember it as lived in the nurses home there. Great memories, just wondering if anyone remembers me especiallyJacinta Fitzpatrick and Sheree Hamilton as we shared a flat together ,then after our training we all moved to Oxford and worked at the Acland Hospital . Sadly we all went out separate ways but would be lovely to be In Contact again. -
Both my father William, and I were born here.. 1928...1956.
My father sadly was transfered from here to St. MICHAEL'S HOSPICE, as he quite vehemently did not want to die at St. Helen's. -
My Stepmother trained at St Helen's & finished as a ward Sister on ward 2 still have her training medal Bless her and

I just about remember :-) some great parties there in the late 70's, Male nurse called Jim used to organise most of them, Think he may have been Irish

I remember going there to have a verruca cut out of my left foot. the doctor injected my foot then cut the verruca out and finally cauterized the the affected area. I remember it smelling like burnt cheese. When the anaesthetic wore off it was very painful. probably got the verruca at the White Rock swimming baths while attending swimming lessons with Hastings Secondary Modern School during the 1950's.

I too was born there on 30th October 1953. We moved to London 3 years later, but remainder of my family have stayed put in Hastings. I still go back many times to see them, still love Hastings after all these years....

My brother was born in 1949 at St Helens hospital and my mum always told me it was it was going to be closed at that time. In1976 I moved to Hastings to complete my training at St Helens. I met lots of lovely friends and enjoyed my time there and learnt a lot of things. 1977 when the weather was good we took some patients to have a afternoon tea at Fairlight WI which was a great memory all enjoyed the afternoon.

So lovely to see a comment from Jogish above. My first house job (for Drs Wray and Strouthedis) was there Aug 1987 - Feb 1988 and I learnt a great deal from Jogish (who I remember very well - extremely enthusiastic and who called us all "doctor, doctor" whoever we were) along with the other Registrars such as Arpan Bannergee Martin Thomas and many others. Sincere thanks to them all, they left me much wiser and stood me in good stead for the years to come! Other house officers included Jane Dougherty and Hamish Hay. I also remember a Dr Reid's gastroscope, a Senior Reg (Dr Dennison), a surgeon commander and the red and black carpet tiles in the short corridor from the doctors house to the main hospital corridor - etched into my mind from seeing them many times thru half closed eyes at 4 am! Lovely also to see the photos - a wonderful website, bought back lots of memories. Great if anyone from those days can get in touch, I am at ralphaustin@doctors.org.uk. Best wishes

Fond memories of working there and the notorious parties !). I was the Pharmacy manager for a number of years in the eighties. The hospital was the perfect size for multidisciplinary team working, everyone friendly and helpful...and in an era when work hard / play hard was the norm .

I worked there in one of the geriatric wards for the summer of 1975 just before going to college. Helping to take care of those unfortunate stroke victims made me grow up fast. Worked with some great staff, I wonder where they are now or if any remember me.Grew to love Hastings that summer and have visited from Ireland many times in the intervening years.
