The gardens were subscription for private use. In the late 1800s perhaps around the time of this photo my great 4X grandfather was employed as the gardener. He was elderly at the time in the days before Old Age Pension.

Just a glimpse of the beautiful Castle Hotel at the bottom left hand corner. It was a travesty that this building was demolished and replaced by the brutalist concrete monstrosity which was Tesco. This would never be allowed to happen these days.
When she re married in 1956,my grandmother held her reception at the Castle Hotel. I remember the deep plush carpets,and bendy floors of the hallways. I also remember hiding with my sister (we were bridesmaids) under one of the tables,eating sugar lumps snaffled from the table above us!
