EARLY 1950'S PHOTOGRAPH SHOWING THE BOTTOM OF WELLINGTON SQUARE AND CASTLE HILL ROAD BEHIND IT. THE BUS IS PROBABLY THE MAIDSTONE AND DISTRICT WEST HILL ROUTE

Everything was so much nicer then, even the gardens of the square were enclosed and well looked after.

Thanks for this pic. It is an image and hotel that I have not seen before. The previous comment mentioned the gardens being well kept. In the late Victorian era my 4 x grandfather had a part time job as a gardener there as was noted on his obituary in 1907

The Maidstone and District bus may also be the No.72 from Parker Road via Manor Road and Milward Road, The West Hill route was the No.134 to Fairlight Glen.It was always an adventure travelling up or down Castle Hill Road due to the gradient, narrowness and getting past parked vehicles outside Gilbert Davis Builders Merchants halfway up the hill.

Not sure on the dates
the lamp standard bottom left of pic. was removed to allow the buses to turn and park in the 1950's. I think this is earlier, late 30's by the type of vehicles.
