It’s a dark time in ancient China. Dragons, once allies of men, have been hunted and thrown into dungeons. In a faraway fortress, a girl helps the last living dragon escape and joins him in a quest to retrieve the last dragon egg stolen by a sorcerer who wants to achieve immortality. This odd duo embarks on a journey learning to trust each other and to ensure the survival of the dragons’ lineage.

Arguably the best Star Wars film, the middle part of the original trilogy is packed with drama, tension, humour and a belter of a cliffhanger. Much of its impact has been lost to familiarity (that twist) but it’s a masterpiece, impeccably directed by George Lucas’ old UCLA tutor Kershner.

This is Star Wars from the trenches, with sensational battle scenes and great performances from Jones and Luna.

On the surface, the plot structure of this limp prequel isn’t a million light years away from the original Star Wars. At times you’d think there was more animation than live action on screen – and maybe it’s this toning down of the human element that left the film lacking soul.
