Team America

Far from being an International Rescue-style peacekeeping force, the Mount Rushmore-based gadget-tastic heroes of ‘Team America’ are a we-don’t-do-body-counts insurgency squad that apes the current US administration’s hawkish foreign policies. Any Republican with a sense of humour would hate this; those without might well love it. Genius.

Double Bill: The Snowman / The Snowman & The Snowdog

A double bill of Raymond Briggs’ animated classics. ‘The Snowman’ weaves a spell of magical enchantment as a young boy’s snowman comes to life and escorts him on a magical flying visit to the North Pole. In ‘The Snowman and The Snowdog’ a young boy moves into the house in whose backyard the snowman was built. Finding a photograph of the snowman the boy rebuilds him, fashioning a snow dog out of the excess snow. The trio fly off in a plane to meet Santa, who gives the boy a magical dog collar which will make it the happiest Christmas ever for him.

Sing Sing

A theatre troupe finds escape from the realities of incarceration through the creativity of putting on a play in this film based on a real-life rehabilitation program and featuring a cast that includes formerly incarcerated actors alongside professional actors Colman Domingo and Paul Raci. Featuring a breathtaking performance from Domingo, Sing Sing is an intensely cathartic experience about the transformative and healing power of theatre.

As the net closes in, the duo are forced to make a devastating decision that will mean curtains down for Venom and Eddie – this is their last dance.

Nathan Silver A cantor undergoing a crisis of faith runs into his high school music teacher who is intent on having a late life Bat Mitzvah in this sweet, melancholic comedy. Jason Schwartzman stars alongside Carol Kane as the unlikeliest of odd couples drawn together later in life. Beautifully shot and acted with offhand charm by a superb cast, this elegantly observed, often riotously funny film manages a delicate and moving balance between farce and love story. Cert: 15.
